When I rebooted, I got the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH with the process table filled with instances of RASARP.SYS running. I tried reinstalling RAS several times, with the same result. On one crash, the disk cache was not flushed properly nuking many important files so I ended up re-installing the OS from CDROM.
